Join the army of spiritual warriors
Colin Treworgy
President Bush has said this struggle against terrorism will be a new
kind of warfare—unconventional, a campaign with tactics and battles
we've never seen before.
But you don't have to enlist in the military to join the effort. You
don't have to make war against people or nations. There's an important battleground
that our armed forces can't get to where only you can wipe out terrorism—your
own thinking.
I've enlisted already. I've undertaken a campaign to eliminate from
my thought any mental habit or attitude that is like those that lead to, support,
or provoke terrorism or hate crimes anywhere.
Don't get me wrong. I haven't been contemplating violence against anyone.
But my mental security checks have been lax, and they've let go unchallenged
some thought patterns that shouldn't be on board.
What might these thoughts look like? How about: Anger with other drivers
who get in my way. Envy of a co-worker who has had some special success. Silent
(or not so silent) intolerance of interests and tastes that differ from mine.
Being an accessory to character assassination by listening to or spreading
gossip. Seeking self-interest rather than collective good. Personalizing conflicts
by opposing people rather than ideas. Mistrust or devaluation of people of
other religions, nationalities, or races. Complacency and ignorance about
the problems of people I don't know.

To my mind, this makes this war a spiritual war.

When taken collectively, these individual cells of obnoxious thinking
support a mental climate that can explode into serious trouble.
To my mind, this makes this war a spiritual one, because I can't hope
to eradicate this kind of thinking without divine help.
Divine power will support my conscientious effort to attack anger with
patience. I can defeat envy and self-interest with gratitude and benevolence
because although I may not have all I want, I can trust my divine Father to
supply all that I really need. Constantly acknowledging that we are all part
of God's multifaceted creation helps me to appreciate and respect those that
have different tastes, backgrounds, and ideas.
Daily holding close the fact that I am the child of divine Love will
help me to uncover and express my natural ability to care about others. Holding
faithfully to the fact that all is really under divine control will allow
me to forgive others and help me to listen for orders from the divine Spirit.

The goal is worth the effort.

This internal warfare won't be over quickly. It will take a sustained
effort over a long period of time. It will take constant vigilance of thought.
I can't allow my attention to be taken over by pride, complacency, or self-indulgence.
I'll have to make sacrifices and I'll have some setbacks, but the goal is
worth the effort. I know I can win this war because it is led, supported,
and probably mandated, by a higher spiritual power. I know that this higher
power dwells with me and with everyone.
There won't be any victory parades if I as an individual secure my own
mental territory, but the collective effect of millions conducting this warfare
along with me will eliminate sanctuaries for terrorist-like thinking and create
an environment that supports permanent world peace.
If we all join in this new warfare it will make a difference in America
and the world. Join now—your country and your world need you!
